“It’s really a celebratory record, powerful, gritty, African, Trance meets Zep,” Plant says. “The whole impetus of my life as a singer has to be driven by a good brotherhood. I am very lucky to work with The Sensational Space Shifters. They come from exciting areas of contemporary music…I have been around awhile and I ask myself, do I have anything to say? Is there a song still inside me? In my heart? I see life and what’s happening to me. Along the trail there are expectations, disappointments, happiness, questions and strong relationships,” Plant explains, “... and now I’m able to express my feelings through melody, power and trance; together in a kaleidoscope of sound, colour, and friendship.”

Carry Fire, Robert Plant's eleventh solo album and first full-length release since 2014's acclaimed lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar, was produced by Plant in the west of England and Wales, at Top Cat studio in Box, Wiltshire with additional recordings at Real World and Rockfield studios. As with lullaby, Plant is accompanied by The Sensational Space Shifters: Justin Adams on guitar, acoustic guitar, oud, E-bow quartet, percussion, snare drum, tambourine; John Baggott on keyboards, moog, loops, percussion, drums, brass arrangement, t'bal, snare drum, slide guitar, piano, electric piano, bendir; Billy Fuller on bass, keyboards, and drum programming; Dave Smith on bendir, tambourine, djembe, drum kit; and Liam "Skin" Tyson on dobro, guitar, acoustic guitar, pedal steel, and twelve-string.

Plant and the Space Shifters are also joined on Carry Fire by a number of special guests. Chrissie Hynde joins Plant on the duet "Bluebirds Over the Mountain" (written by rockabilly legend Ersel Hickey and later recorded by both Richie Valens and The Beach Boys). Albanian cellist Redi Hasa performs on three tracks, as does the celebrated Seth Lakeman on viola and fiddle.

Carry Fire is "a swirling mix of deep blues, mountain music, North African rhythms and Zeppelin-heavy weight ... The result is a heady, autumnal record, blending Mr. Plant’s early influences ... blues-fueled riffs, Berber sounds and Bristol trip-hop sonics." (Robert Plant)

Juju were invited to be the support band for Robert Plant’s Band of Joy European Tour in 2010. It came about through his close connection with Justin Adams and Billy Fuller - former fellow band members of the Strange Sensation which ran from 2000 to 2007 - and his interest in the unique sound Justin and Juldeh Camara had hit upon (mixing Desert Blues and Rock ‘n Roll with the West African Fulani fiddle, vocals and North African Gnawa rhythms). The following summer Robert sat in with Juju at The Hay On Wye Literary Festival which led to an invitation to join him at Clarksdale Blues and Gospel Festival in July 2012. In the lead up to this show they performed at the Gloucester Guildhall, the Kentish Town Forum and Womad and were joined by other Strange Sensation members Skin Tyson and John Baggott plus Patty Griffin for some of the shows. In October 2012 the band did their first extensive tour in South America under the new name Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters. Dave went on to work with Robert for the next 6 years until he left the band in 2018. They toured the world twice over and recorded two studio albums -‘lullaby and… The Ceaseless Roar in 2014 (for which they received a gold disc) and Carry Fire in 2017 which featured violinist Seth Lakeman. Performance highlights from these tours include playing at Glastonbury Festival, Austin City Limits, the Sydney Opera House, Lollapalooza in South America, The Royal Albert Hall and Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, and the band made appearances on The One Show, Later… with Jools Holland, The Colbert Report, The Late Late Show with James Corden and The Tonight Show featuring Jimmy Fallon.

drummer Dave Smith exhibited a mastery of irresistible rhythms that ran from the Bo Diddley-ish beat of the title track from ‘Carry Fire’ to a simple bass drum-gospel-tambourine accompaniment for ‘The Gallows Pole’. He also brought the mighty rock drive of the Zeppelin songbook with ‘That’s the Way’, ‘Misty Mountain Hop’, ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and ‘Bring It on Home’.
